Was there a time when you were so impacted by the words of others that it caused you pain? I am sure we can all remember such a time. In fact, for some this may still be the case.
The words that others speak can create a wounding in us, and yet with spiritual maturity comes understanding. Understanding to discern what is really behind the words that are being spoken.
If we are overly sensitive, then we are likely reacting out of the soul, and can be easily offended. If we are being corrected by someone who has no godly understanding, then we need to maintain the right perspective. If, however, we are corrected by someone who is walking in close relationship with the Lord, then we must take this into consideration and look for the value, as we listen. When we are being corrected by someone who does not know the Lord, then our spiritual maturity should allow us to see beyond what is being said. Maturity allows grace to flow in all situations, for we know what they do not!
Maturity in our relationship with Jesus brings us to a place that does not require explanations. We are secure in the knowledge that our identity in Christ causes love to pour forth.
1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke about childish matters, for I saw things like a child and reasoned like a child. But the day came when I matured, and I set aside my childish ways.
