There is a documentary about helicopter rescue near the Matterhorn in Switzerland that has captured my attention. The other day it occurred to me that the people who are skiing, mountain climbing, or just enjoying the natural landscape of the region are fully aware that should they need help there is someone nearby. I have to believe that this is not something that is far from their consciousness and that many decisions that they make are reliant on that help. I know that it would be for me!
Sometimes our ability to take a risk is because we are fully aware that we have a safety net that is always ready and willing to assist us. I remember a ride at the local fair growing up that had you standing, strapped to the wall, and as it spun at high speed the floor fell away. It became obvious where once there was a floor, now you were not on solid footing. This was fine for a scare when I was a teenager, but not so as I matured and knew there were lots of frightening things afoot in life.
As a believer, I take comfort in knowing that Jesus is my safety net in all situations. In other words, I am assured that as I step out into the unknown the Holy Spirit is ever present to show me where I should plant my foot. Jesus promised that we would not be abandoned, but that the Father would take care of us, and the Holy Spirit would be our Helper.
