Can you relate to a heart that is already mourning?

Even as we gathered around the Thanksgiving table this year, I was aware that some people were experiencing a different season. For these, there was such a gratefulness that their loved ones were present, but equally an awareness that there was uncertainty for the immediate days ahead.

I know of two family situations where illness is taking its toll, and it is difficult for everyone involved. These families have been given a diagnosis that does not imply their loved ones have much more time.

Over thirty years ago my father was taken from us suddenly. It was a devastating time for all my family as it was not expected. We had no warning, and so when it hit us we were taken unaware. For some years my dad was not in the greatest of health, but since he was only in his sixties, I just naturally assumed he still had many years to live.

I am not sure if it is better to have time to sort through your feelings when you know something is coming, or to suddenly find yourself in the mist of mourning. Either way, I know that the timing is never right, but somehow we do get through it all. God gives us the strength that we need to face these difficult, life alternating days.

As I thought about this post today I was thinking how very good God is to us. Even when we are feeling our worst, He is ever present. Tonight I was sharing some concerns with a friend, and what became clear as I was speaking was what I know is absolutely true. God works all things for good. I have never been in a situation where I have not seen His very best come forth, even when things have looked dire.

As believers, we must all hold fast to God, for it is from Him we get our strength.

Psalm 145:9 NKJV The Lord is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works.
